FAIPP HonFAIPP GM Photog. FNZIPP

Tony is a Grand Master of Photography of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) as well as the Wedding Portrait Photographers International (WPPI). He is also an Honorary Fellow of the AIPP and a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography.

Tony’s career highlights feature over 150 state, national and international photography awards. In September 2013, Tony was awarded the prestigious title of Canon AIPP Australian Professional Photographer of the Year, and in the same year received the New Zealand Overseas Photographer of the Year, the Australian Landscape Photographer of the Year and the Western Australian Landscape Photographer of the Year.

Tony Hewitt has been a professional photographer for 33 years. He started in the wedding industry, shooting just under 1000 weddings, and he has photographed family and child portraits for the last 25 years. “I have also been photographing landscapes for over 20 years and have had gallery representation for my fine-art landscape for the last ten.”

Tony uses Phase One medium format and Nikon 35mm camera systems, along with a wide range of lenses for different purposes. However, when it comes to aerials, he is generally using a standard lens – an 80mm for medium format which is the equivalent to a 50mm for the full frame format. “I use Gitzo tripods and I have used Lowepro and Think Tank camera bags since I started. For me, quality equipment is essential and the final outcome of my photographic vision is only as good as the weakest link.

“I use Capture One raw processing software and Photoshop to fine tune my files, mainly working with simple techniques. Curves, saturation, masking and blending modes are utilised to highlight and bring out the strengths in an image, always maintaining the essential vision that drew me to press the button. My images are usually single capture with a simple composition and a simple narrative, or a celebration of aesthetics through geometry and symbology.”
